When it comes to washing produce, are you a quick rinser or a deep soaker? While there’s no need to go to extravagant measures to wash your fruits and veggies, you should be giving them a good clean to remove unwanted dirt or bugs. Here are 3 simple and effective ways you can use to wash your produce.
1. Soak Your Produce in Salt Water
Mix together 1 part salt and 9 parts water in a clean bowl or sanitized sink. Then add the fruits and vegetables you want to clean. Let the produce soak for 20 to 30 minutes. Doing this will help remove most of the pesticides, and has been shown to draw out bugs as well.
2. Give Your Produce a Vinegar Bath
White vinegar is an effective ingredient to add to your produce wash. It helps clean things off, and can also help your food last longer. To make this mixture add 1 part vinegar and 4 parts water. Let your produce bathe for 5 minutes before rinsing.
3. Wash Your Produce in Cold Water
Our last suggested method for produce washing, is to let your fruits and vegetables sit in a cold water bath for a couple of minutes. You can use a brush to help get any dirt out of the small grooves in your produce.
Bonus Tip: Keep an eye on your fruit bowl, and get rid of any aging fruit. This will help keep fruit flies and other pests away.
