How do you solve the frogs and toads puzzle? ›

To solve the puzzle is to move all frogs to the right and all toads to the left. When this is done, we can think of the result as having a new puzzle where backward-looking frogs became toads, and the backward-looking toads turned into forward-looking frogs.

One point is scored for each toad lying completely flat on the surface of the table and two points for each toad in the hole. Any toad which hits the backboard or falls to the floor does not score.

The table for Toad in the Hole is about 15 inches across and 24 inches long. The playing surface slopes towards the players who stand behind a line 8 feet from the front of the board. In the centre of the table is a hole of about 2 inches in diameter through which the toads can fall.

Frogs have smooth, somewhat slimy skin. Toads have dry, warty skin. Frogs have long legs, built for jumping. Toads have shorter legs and prefer to get around by crawling.

Several toad species are federally listed as endangered or threatened. The biggest threats to toads are habitat degradation and invasive species. Touching a toad will not cause warts—however, the bufotoxin found on its skin can cause irritation.

The objective of the puzzle is to switch the positions of all the colored frogs, so that all three green frogs are on the right and all three brown frogs are on the left. When all the frogs have reached the other side of the pond, you win! Click on a frog to make it jump forward.

Strategy tips

A group of six frogs can sweep from one end of the board to the other, arranging all other frogs to face the same direction. Try and make two rows/columns of frogs face opposite directions, that way, you can always use the other row/column to change the directionthe other row/column is facing.

Five frogs are sitting on a log. Four decide to jump off, how many are left on the log? The presumptive and perhaps obvious or optimistic answer would be one? But the answer is five, because deciding to jump off is different to committing, taking action and jumping!
