Levi Ackerman has a lot going for him. He is by far one of the most popular characters in Attack on Titan, proven by the fact that he's topped two consecutive popularity polls by a landslide.Not only is he the captain of the Special Operations Squad in Survey Corps, but he's also been dubbed as humanity's greatest soldier for his unrivaled swordsmanship, agility, and strength. Plus he's killed more Titans than anyone else in the series, totaling over 58.

Although Levi is the hope of the Survey Corps and admiredby his peers and superiors, he's arguably sufferedmore than the majority of characters throughout the entire series.
10 He Was Forced Into Joining The Survey Corps Then Lost His Closest Friends
Attack on Titan: No Regretsis a side story thatfollowsLevi's past as an underground thug before he joined the Survey Corps. After being actively pursued by Erwin Smith and fellow Survey Corps members, Levi and his close friends, Furlan and Isabel, were interrogated on where they learned to use ODM gear. Erwin noted that he was impressed with their skills and essentially blackmailed Levi alongside his friends to join the Survey Corps by saying that he would allow Levi's crimes to go unpunished if they joined.
As the story unfolds, Levi arrives at a gruesome scene where he sees Furlan and Isabel lying dead after being killed by Titans. Unsurprisingly, he goes into a rage and brutally kills the Titan responsible for their deaths.
9 His Entire Special Operations Squad Was Wiped Out
Levi's original Special Operations Squad consisted of Eld Jinn, Petra Ral, Oluo Bozado, and Gunther Schultz. But sadly, every single member was horrifically wiped out by the Female Titan, aka Annie Leonhart.
As Levi traveled through the forest and saweach of his precious comrades dead, his expression was numb, alluding to the fact that perhaps he's become so desensitized to his friends dying.
8 He Broke His Leg Trying To Save His Comrades
Poor Levi didn't even have a moment to mourn the loss of his entire Special Operations Squad before he and an emotionally distressed Mikasa were in pursuit of the Female Titan who had stolen Eren.After Levi rationalizes with Mikasa and explained they had to limit themselves to a single goal of saving Eren, he launches himself at the Female Titan, backing her into a corner with his infamousfighting style.
At this point, Mikasa underestimates the situation and naively thinks she can kill the Female Titan and goes for her nape.LuckilyLevi saves her, but at the cost of breaking his leg.
7 He LostHis Mother As A Child
Levi's mother, Kuchel Ackerman, lived in the underground city and worked as a prostitute. Little is known about her overall,but she seemed to be a loving mother and tried to raise Levi on her own.

Kuchel dies of an unknown disease and Kenny Ackerman, Levi's uncle and Kuchel's older brother goes to visit her without yet knowing she has died. After entering her room, a young Levi, who was on the brink of death due to starvation, sat by his mother's bed and informed Kenny that she was dead.
6 His Own Uncle Tried To Kill Him
Kenny sought to obtainUri Reiss's Titan powers when hebefriended him after originally trying to kill him. He used his influence working for the government to establish the Anti-Personnel Control Squad and claimed that the squad's aim was to oppose the Survey Corps in order to get approval from the Assembly. But in actuality, his aim was totake the Founding Titan's powers.
Consumed with a thirst for power, Kenny went above and beyond to get what he wanted and even tried killing his nephew, Levi, in the process.
5 He Was Made To Look After The Beast Titan & WasBetrayed In The Process
While Zeke Yeager, aka the Beast Titan, tricked Paradis Island into believing he was on their side so he could successfully fulfill his own agenda, Levi was lumped with looking after him. Considering he made a promise to Erwin Smith to kill the Beast Titan yet he was now having to protect him, the situation wasn't ideal, to say the least.
However, Zeke revealed his betrayal as he turned multiple Survey Corps members into Titans with his scream whilst he ran away from his hideout. A devastated Levi was left in the midst of this danger and was forced to kill his comrades as a result.
4 He Had To Make The Decision To Let Erwin Die
A heartwrenching predicament that left fans at the edge of the seats was the moment Levi had to make the decision of who would survive between Erwin and Armin. Hewas preparedto save Erwin until Erwin unconsciously pushed the fluid out of his hand as he hallucinated about his past life.

Levi then decided to let Erwin die andallow Armin, who had already demonstrated incredible leadership abilities, to have the opportunity flourish further.
3 He Suffered Permanent Injuries
Leviwas severely injured after Zeke blew himself up with a Thunder Spear. As the blast blew him away, he was left in a horrific state and lost many of his fingers. More so, during the final battle to stop the Rumbling, Levi loses the use of his legs whilst still healing from his prior injuries.
The final Attack on Titan chapter revealed that Levi was now in a wheelchair due to the multiple injuries he suffered.
2 Eren Constantly Got Him Into Bad Situation
Time and time again, Levi was left to pick up the pieces when it came to Eren. Whether this was saving him from being abducted or rushing to his aid when he made the independent decision to launch an attack on Marley, Levi was forever bearing the brunt of saving Eren from his troubles, while suffering in the process.
1 He Essentially LostEveryone Precious To Him
Levi has dealt with many incrediblypainfullossesthroughout the series. From his mother to his closest friends and entire squad, including both Erwin and Hange, there's no doubt that Levi has suffered more loss than most.
However, one redeeming thing the series did for him is in the final chapter wherehe was able to give one final salute to his fallen comrades before they ventured off into the great beyond.
