Commercial Frosting Versus Real Buttercream

😲 I made a whole fifteen cents writing the inaugural three articles for Better Baking. So why not try to make it thirty cents? Thank you to my loyal readers for the pennies — it’s the thought that counts.
Let’s start with commercial cake frostings. By commercial I mean any frosting you’d buy from the grocery store in a tiny plastic tub or that grocery store bakeries use to frost their cakes.
Tub o’ Frosting
IDK about you, but I find the tub o’ frosting to be overly sweet and to have a waxy mouthfeel (not a good thing). These shelf-stable frostings are vegetable shortening and sugar with some artificial flavoring. Yum.
If you haven’t been spoiled by homemade buttercream frosting, they will do in a pinch.
Take Note: One tub is never enough to cover a standard eight or nine-inch two-layer cake though, so grab two.
