Crop running, sometimes referred to as farm running, is the act of visiting farming locations in sequence to efficiently harvest crops. Crop running is the most effective way to gain Farming experience, compared to waiting for growing crops to complete.

Crop running can be combined with activities such as item alchemising or bolt fletching.

Even though all farming locations can be reached on foot, or by boat, it may, especially with high Farming levels, be worth obtaining teleports. Lunar Magic is available for higher level users and is helpful for its Fishing Guild teleport, as well as the Cure Plant and Fertile Soil spells. These spells are available between Magic levels 66 and 83, following completion of the Lunar Diplomacy quest.

Many crops may be harvested at double speed by clicking the crop 2-5 times in quick succession after the first harvest.

Note that the below guides only give one or a select few options on how to approach each run. Other ways of transportation can be used, just as different combinations of multiple crop runs.

Herb run[edit | edit source]

Herb runs can be completed during vegetable and flower runs as there is one herb patch per allotment location. A herb-only run can take between five and ten minutes. Leprechauns can exchange herbs for notes to save inventory space. There are four disease-free herb patches, one found atop the Troll Stronghold following the completion of My Arm's Big Adventure, one in Weiss following the completion of Making Friends with My Arm, one in Hosidius, and one that becomes disease free in Civitas illa Fortis following the accumulation of 16,000 Glory in the Fortis Colosseum.

A player may wish to bring extra supplies for additional trips following a completed run, after a break of approximately 80 minutes. When the player logs in, they will immediately be at the herb patch ready to harvest and plant a new seed. Logging out at a herb patch minimises run time, thus, it may be most beneficial to log out at the Trollheim patch, followed by the Port Phasmatys patch.

A herb run can be very profitable. Visit the herb farming calculator for an overview of the currently most profitable seeds.

Requirements[edit | edit source]

Recommendations[edit | edit source]

Equipment and inventory[edit | edit source]

Farming the herbs[edit | edit source]

  1. Clear the patch by raking the weeds. This requires a rake.
  2. Use compost, supercompost, or ultracompost on the patch to reduce the risk of crop disease and to increase the minimum and average yield.
  3. Use a seed dibber to plant the herb seed.
  4. Wait for the crop to grow. During this time, feel free to plant other seeds or do any other activity.
  5. Return to the patch
  6. Harvest the crop using magic secateurs and a spade.
  7. Use compost, supercompost, or ultracompost on the patch to reduce the risk of crop disease and to increase the minimum and average yield.
  8. Plant a new herb seed, requiring a seed dibber.
  9. Use a herb on the nearby Tool Leprechaun to note them. If you have access to a herb sack, this can save time on trips to the leprechaun.
  10. Swap empty buckets with the leprechaun for more compost or supercompost.
  11. If using the leprechaun to store your tools, don't forget to return them after the last patch.

Fruit tree and calquat tree run[edit | edit source]

Fruit tree patches should be easily accessible to most players except for the one in Lletya (see Farming/Patch locations). Fruit trees take approx 15 hours to grow (includes time when not logged in). For all practical purposes, a fruit tree run is done once per day so you do not need to use an amulet of nature. For a faster run, ensure that saplings have been prepared in advance. Since fruit tree runs are done daily, they are often done in conjunction with calquat trees as they are generally along the route.

Tree, fruit tree, calquat tree, and celastrus tree run[edit | edit source]

This guide can be used as a daily farm run. This run gives a lot of Farming experience with high experience per hour rates. This strategy gives approximately 215,000 Farming experience per run, while costing 2,168,279 coins per run. Note that the celastrus tree will grow celastrus bark, which can be sold for around 67,416 coins per run, assuming an average of 8 celastrus barks per tree, thus saving a bit on the beforementioned cost.

Cheaper seed alternatives can be used to reduce the cost per experience. However, this will also reduce the amount of experience per run. For example, a run using maple seeds and palm tree seeds instead of magic seeds and dragonfruit tree seeds will give approximately 109,000 Farming experience, while costing 409,967 coins, minus the returned celastrus bark.

Since most herb patches are accompanied by flower and allotment patches, many players choose to also grow allotments and flowers on their herb runs. This section only visits the six herb locations in which all aforementioned patches are found together. Visit the section below for a guide on a run that visits all herb patches.

Hop run[edit | edit source]

Hops patches are often not as conveniently located near teleport locations as allotment patches, and have only one patch to farm. That being said, certain crops such as Yanillian hops, barley, and jute fibre can net some decent profit for such low level Farming.

Requirements[edit | edit source]

  • Level Crop running (167) 3 to plant the lowest level hop seed.

Willow branch run[edit | edit source]

Willow branches cannot be harvested immediately after a willow has its health checked on. This run is used to harvest the willow branches and is performed in the same manner as a tree run. Best if performed 30 minutes after the willow tree's health has been checked on to yield 6 willow branches. This run yields very little Farming experience.

Inventory[edit | edit source]

Willow tree run sequence[edit | edit source]

  • Similar to a normal tree run. Less banking is required though.

Example willow branch run sequence[edit | edit source]

Assumes completion of the Tree Gnome Village quest. Use a ring of dueling and a log to teleport to Castle Wars and ride the Balloon to Taverley.

  • Start off at the bank and withdraw (magic) secateurs.
  • Farm the tree at the Varrock Castle Courtyard tree patch and use the amulet of nature on the patch.
  • Farm the tree at the Tree Gnome Stronghold patch.
  • Deposit the harvest at the Tree Gnome Stronghold bank and withdraw methods to teleport to both Falador and Taverley if needed.
  • Teleport to Falador.
  • Farm the tree at the Falador Park patch.
  • Teleport to Taverley.
  • Farm the Taverley tree patch.
  • Teleport to Lumbridge.
  • Farm the tree patch west of Lumbridge Castle.

Farm the willow branches[edit | edit source]

  • Requires the player to use the (magic) secateurs on the tree to obtain 1 willow branch. Typically, this is done 6 times per stop.

Supercompost run[edit | edit source]

Supercompost runs are performed in the same manner as vegetable runs. Once supercompost runs are started, the buckets of supercompost can be stored with Tool Leprechauns. Supercompost runs are not intended to train the Farming skill. 25 volcanic ash can be used to transform supercompost still inside a compost bin into ultracompost.

Inventory[edit | edit source]

Supercompost run sequence[edit | edit source]

  • Players can deposit a large stack of noted empty buckets to the Tool Leprechauns. This is extremely useful to do before beginning a supercompost run.
  • Withdraw 15 supercompost items, teleport to Camelot and run east to the allotment patch just north of Catherby.
  • Fill the compost bin with the items. If the bin is already full from a previous run, withdraw empty buckets from the Leprechaun and empty the bin. Filled buckets can be handed back to the leprechaun.
  • Teleport to Ardougne and run to the northern bank in East Ardougne and withdraw items for the next stop.
  • Farm the supercompost at the allotment patch that is north of East Ardougne.
  • Teleport to Falador, withdraw items for the next stop, then run south to the allotment patch.
    • Alternatively, teleport to Draynor Village and run north to this allotment patch.
  • Farm the supercompost.
    • Falador can be the last stop in the run for levels 1-30.
  • withdraw items for the next stop at the closest bank, then use the Ectophial to teleport to Port Phasmatys.
  • Farm the supercompost at the allotment patch that is west of Port Phasmatys.
  • At 45 Farming, the beginner level of the Farming Guild can be accessed, which contains a big compost bin, capable of making twice as much supercompost than the regular bin.

Farm the supercompost[edit | edit source]

  • Remove 15 empty buckets from the Tool Leprechaun.
  • Use an empty bucket on compost bin to fill them with supercompost.
    • To completely empty the compost bin, two trips to the Tool Leprechaun may be needed.
  • Deposit buckets of supercompost with the Tool Leprechaun.
  • Fill compost bin with supercompost ingredients.
  • Either deposit buckets of supercompost with the Tool Leprechaun or withdraw them to sell.
