Elden Ring forces you to work most things out for yourself, and that can make some of the puzzles especially tricky, yet all the more rewarding to solve. One of the vaguest instructions you’ll get during your adventure is when you’ll simply be told to “Seek three wise beasts”, with little indication of what that means.
There is one in Liurnia of the Lakes, but the far more challenging version is high up on the Moonlight Altar in the late game – in a place called Chelona’s Rise. The three beasts you need to seek are spread out across the large Moonlight Altar area, so we’ll tell you where to find them all and solve the puzzle.
First wise beast location in Elden Ring
The first is directly behind Chelona’s Rise. Head out of the building to the right and there are some regular old tortoises ambling about the place. If you peer over the cliff’s edge it will be hanging on there, so use a ranged attack to knock it down.
Second wise beast location in Elden Ring
Head to the far east of Moonlight Altar for this one. There, head up a hill to your left as you approach, going around the right side of the cliff edge. Down the bottom will be a small hill if you look down, and the tortoise will be waiting there for you.
Third wise beast location in Elden Ring
The final one is all the way north from Chelona’s Rise, by the evergaol. You’ll need to use Torrent on a nearby Spiritspring in the forest, which will send you straight up to the final tortoise you need to bop.
Ranni’s Dark Moon location in Elden Ring
Once you’ve given a tap to all three tortoises, you can head inside Chelona’s Rise and pick up the powerful Ranni’s Dark Moon spell – an alternative to Rennala’s Full Moon spell. It’s also necessary for getting every trophy in Elden Ring.
The first spirit turtle is right in front of the entrance. The second spirit turtle is directly left of the staircase leading into Oridys's Rise. It's hiding in the bushes, and therefore a bit hard to spot. The third spirit turtle is in the middle of the pond on the right side (west) of the tower's entrance.

The first turtle is found directly to the west of Chelona's Rise, clinging to the cliff's edge below. You can use a bow, a magic spell, or an AoE attack to hit it. The second turtle will take you further afield, at the most southerly tip of the plateau, far to the east.
You need to ride the spiritspring up to hit the tortoise as you do. It may take a few tries. Once you hit all three tortoises you'll receive the message “the seal on the rise has opened”, informing you that you've solved the Chelona's Rise puzzle.
Dante meets three creatures: a leopard, a lion, and a she-wolf. Selecting these three creatures in succession has many possible purposes. A passage from the bible, Jeremiah 5:6, invokes these same exact animals as omens for those who refuse to beg for forgiveness for their sins.
The gentle, but giant, pope turtle actually goes by the name Miriel, Pastor of Vows and you can find him at the Church of Vows on the eastern side of Liurnia of the Lakes. The map below shows the exact location.
There is a slanted stone block resting on the land on the same level as the tower. Look down below those cliffs, and the tortoise is in the corner. The last tortoise is the one players might miss. It's high up on one of the tree trunks to the right of the tower.
Giant tortoises are found only in the Galapagos Islands and prefer to live in dry lowlands, although some are found in the misty highlands on Santa Cruz. They are also found on the islands of Pinzon, Española and Isabela.
Near the front of the tower, you will find a small Imp statue with a message: "Seek three wise beasts". While vague, this message holds the key to the Oridys's Rise puzzle. After reading the message, three ethereal turtles will spawn around the tower. To get inside, you need to find and kill all three of these turtles.
Most nesting sea turtle species come ashore at night, alone, and often during high tide. Some species, such as the Kemp's ridley, nest during the day and generally emerge from the ocean by the hundreds to lay their nests in a mass nesting event called an arribada or arrival.
After seeking these three great wise beasts, players should find that the seal that was preventing entrance into Chelona's Rise is gone, and they can now go inside. At the top of the tower, fans will find a chest that contains Ranni's Dark Moon.
Stars of Ruin is obtained by interacting with Primeval Sorcerer Lusat, as part of Sorceress Sellen's Questline. He can be found in the hidden Sellia Hideaway dungeon at the northeastern border of Caelid and Dragonbarrow, but his prison can only be opened with a Sellian Sealbreaker given by Sellen herself.
The Fallingstar Beast can be spotted in three locations in Elden Ring: Inside Sellia Crystal Tunnel in the eastern parts of Caelid. Southwest the Outer Wall Phantom Tree Site of Lost Grace in Altus Plateau. The Full Grown Fallingstar Beast is southwest of the Ninth Mt.
It gives you nothing but the cryptic clue, “seek three wise beasts. The wise beasts in question are sectral tortoises found in the vicinity of the tower and, as you might have guessed, there are three to find. You can spot the first venerable old tortoise on the path behind you, near the lectern.
