What is the history of post cereal company? ›

In 1895, Post founded Postum Cereal Co., with his first product, Postum cereal beverage. Post's first breakfast cereal premiered in 1897, and he named the product Grape-Nuts cereal because of the fruity aroma noticed during the manufacturing process and the nutty crunch of the finished product.

Post Cereal Brands Spun Off as Separate Company, Post Foods

After General Foods merged with Kraft Foods in 1989, Post cereal brands were later spun off into a new company, Post Foods®.

All Post Consumer Brands products have a code (or “Best When Used By”) date on the package. For example, if the code date reads “MAR 03 22,” the corresponding “Use By” date is March 3, 2022. The product should be enjoyed by this date.

Post also decided to add something to his cereal that Kellogg never would, sugar. Adding grape sugar to his recipe, he baked the mixture and ground the results in a coffee grinder to create small crunchy nuggets. He named his new product Grape-Nuts and began to sell it on the ever-growing national markets in 1897.
