How to Make a Pinch Pot (2024)

How to make a pinch pot out of clay:

  • Start with a ball of clay that fits comfortably in your hand.
  • Use your thumb to press into the center of the ball, creating a shallow indentation.
  • With your thumb on the inside and fingers on the outside, begin pinching the clay gently, working your way around the circumference.
  • Continue pinching and rotating the clay, gradually widening and deepening the pot to your desired shape and thickness.
  • Smooth out any cracks or uneven areas with your fingers or a damp sponge.
  • Once you’re satisfied with the shape, let the pinch pot air dry completely, usually for a day or two depending on the clay type, weather, and thickness.
  • Or can decorate the pot with textures, patterns, or add ons before it dries completely.
  • Once dry, you can fire the pinch pot in a kiln if you have access to one, or you can let it air dry completely if using air-dry clay.
