2024 Wheat Harvest update: The harvest is so good, farmers are even in a good mood
June 13, 2024 Cueball
By James Jordan, Sumner Newscow and the Kansas Wheat Commission — The Sumner County wheat harvest is in full swing this week, and so far, the results have been so good that farmers are in a good mood.
Chuck Dowell, location manager for Wellington MKC, said with harvest now at the halfway mark, the yield has been exceptional, the protein has been good, and the moisture content has been workable.
“We have been getting 40 to 60 bushels per acre wheat, and in some places, the yield has been over 70,” said Chuck Dowell, location manager for Wellington MKC. “That is much better than the last couple of years.”
Moisture is running around 11 to 12 percent, and protein levels are also very good ranging as high as 62 pounds per bushel.
Recent rains have most certainly helped fill the heads. But now, the recent spat of dry weather has helped farmers get the combines in the field. Some areas are still too wet, but if there is no more rain, they should be fine in a day or two. Weather.com is reporting no rain in the forecast.
Dowell said the elevator has been extremely busy. But he expects the number of trucks to start to taper off as some farmers complete cutting. Others will continue throughout the next couple of weeks.
The Kansas Wheat Commission reports that officially statewide Kansas is now 5 percent complete, ahead of 1 percent complete last year and on average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending June 9, 2024. Winter wheat conditions overall were rated at 33 percent very poor to poor, 35 percent fair and 32 percent good to excellent.

Jerry Houlden
Jerrold (Jerry) Eugene Houlden died on June 9, 2024, at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield, at the age of 85. Jerry was born to Ben and Helen (Bragg) Houlden in Elwood, Neb. on April 12, 1939. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, and his three older siblings Eldon, Millie, and David.
Jerry graduated from Elwood High School in 1957. One of his extracurricular activities in high school was as a member of the basketball team where teammates affectionately began calling him “Goose” for his tall frame, long arm span and moves they felt resembled that of Harlem Globetrotter legend Reece “Goose” Tatum.
Goose was a nickname that followed Jerry to Kearney State College (now the University of Nebraska at Kearney) where he joined a local fraternity. He is fondly remembered by his fraternity brothers. He loved cars, particularly convertibles, and one classmate specifically remembers his Turquoise and Cream 1958 Dodge that they road-tripped in. Another commented that on a road trip to Bakersfield, California in the summer of 1960, he and Jerry “got to our destination first because Jerry drove fast.” He lived that summer with friends and worked mowing grass at a golf course in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
