Nasi Goreng: IU World’s Fare: International Education Week: Get Involved: Office of International Services: Indiana University (2024)

About this recipe

Nasi goreng (fried rice) is one of the national dishes of Indonesia. Although similar to fried rice from other countries in Asia, what makes nasi goreng different is sweet soy sauce (kecap manis). Nasi goreng is highly influenced by the Chinese immigrants in Indonesia. Historically, Chinese people usually favor freshly cooked hot food, and it is taboo in their culture to throw away uneaten foodstuffs, which then the leftover rice was often recooked in the morning as fried rice. Therefore, nasi goreng is popular in the morning or as breakfast. However, today, nasi goreng can be eaten any time, as breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Even most street food stalls/hawkers selling nasi goreng mostly start selling at the evening.
