I followed the recipe exactly and what I got were little round rocks. The dough was very dry and did not spread while baking. They were tasty but very hard. I don't know why. Won't make these again.

Amazing cookie! Very easy to make! I always use 1/2 butter and 1/2 Butter-Flavored Crisco sticks as I find my cookies keep their shape better with that combo. I substituted dark chocolate chips (because I had a taste for them) and hazelnuts since I didn't have pecans. They're simply delicious! Lots of oat flavor!

Was looking forward to eating these after all the great reviews, what a disappointment. Crunchy yes, but also dry. Butter and good quality chocolate helped with flavor, but would not make again. Am an experienced baker, Probably too much oatmeal. Stick with Toll House recipe and add 1 - 1 1/2 cups oatmeal - been doing this for years (grind it in food processor if you want to disguise from family - they will never know).

My kids don't like nuts so I leave them out. A favorite for my children I make every 3 or 4 months. Don't even make regular chocolate chip cookies any more. These have the added benefit of oatmeal. Love these cookies!!!

I make these with 2 extra large eggs, 3 1/2 cups uncooked quick one-minute oats, 1 pkg. Ghirdelli semisweet chocolate chips and 1 cup chopped English walnuts. The extra 1/2 cup of oats makes them very chewy and also a tad bit less sweet. Several of my friends have requested the recipe. I kept playing with the recipe until I got it like I wanted. Makes 6 dozen cookies and I bake for 15 minutes at 350 in my oven.

These cookies are proof that God loves us and the reason why he invented milk. Oh my goodness. YUM. Yum yum yum. Wow yum. I couldn't find the big morsels so I chopped up some baking chocolate into big and small chunks. You GOTTA add the pecans, they really add a lot of flavor. Then I drizzled some melted chocolate over top of them. ZOW! BAM! SHIZAM!! This will be my forever go-to recipe for oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.

I made these before Christmas and everyone loved them! I like crunchy cookies better than chewy so I'm a big fan of these...mine ended up crunchy but I see that other reviewers said theirs were chewy. They stayed fresh a long time when stored in airtight containers, too (good because there were lots and lots of them). I'm making them again and this time I'm going to make half with raisins instead of chocolate chunks.

Maybe I'm just real slow but this recipe takes longer than 30 minutes. Or maybe it was due to my adjustments - added 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 each cloves, nutmeg and a dash of ginger and substituted Bobs Red Mill 5 grain cereal for 1 1/2 c oatmeal. Never the less these cookies are awesome!!! Had to make another batch within a couple of days cuz they disappeared quick! YUM! Might try adding dried cranberries next time in place of chocolate. Outstanding!

Great oatmeal cookie recipe! Very moist. I added about a cup of dried tart cherries that were softened in hot water for about 15 minutes. Baked them for 13 minutes. Recipe made 45 good size cookies. I will be making these again very soon!

These are my new favorite cookie. Like a chocolate chip cookie, but so much better. They bake so nicely. I substitute walnuts for the pecans and add a few more chocolate chunks. Be warned, these are very addictive.

I have been baking for over 40 years, so I believe that makes me fairly experienced. I followed the directions exactly, using a 1 tbls. scoop. The cookies remained the same same as the sccop when baked. They taste fine, but don't look good. Ultimately I had to flatten them by hand. I will try this again and adjust the moisture.

I made the cookies exactly the same. I really liked the recipe and I liked the crunch of the pecans. I would highly recommend using the chunk chocolate. I have sent the recipe to two friends. I will make this recipe frequently. It makes a generous amount of large cookies.

FAQs

Why are my oatmeal chocolate chip cookies so hard? ›

Overmixing develops the gluten in the flour, which can produce tough cookies. If the recipe doesn't call for an electric mixer, mix in dry ingredients using a wooden spoon. When dry ingredients like flour are "scooped" into the measuring cup directly from the container, it compresses, or becomes packed.

What is the difference between chocolate chip and chocolate chunk cookies? ›

Chocolate chunks are generally made from higher-quality chocolate. They have higher cocoa butter content which means they will melt much faster in the oven. The faster melt creates flatter, gooier cookies with less crunch than regular chocolate chip cookies.

Why won t my chocolate oatmeal cookies harden? ›

Likely, you didn't boil the mixture long enough. You want the butter, milk, sugar, and cocoa mixture to boil for 2-3 full minutes and reach between 190°F-200°F. If you don't boil them for long enough, they will turn out gooey and will not set.

What's the difference between chocolate chip and oatmeal cookies? ›

Chocolate chip cookies have less protein and fiber, and more fat, than oatmeal raisin cookies. Although both types of cookies should be enjoyed in moderation, oatmeal raisin cookies do provide more health benefits than chocolate chip cookies.

How do you keep oatmeal cookies soft after baking? ›

Keep Them Sealed

The key to keeping cookies fresh and soft is to seal them in an airtight container, like a resealable freezer bag. And here's a nifty little trick: add a piece of bread to the bag.

Why are my chocolate chip cookies crunchy and not chewy? ›

The ingredients you use and how you shape your cookies both play an important role in whether your cookies turn out crispy or chewy. The type of flour and sugar you use, if your cookie dough contains eggs, and whether you use melted or softened butter all factor into the crispy-chewy equation, too.

Are semi sweet or milk chocolate chips better for cookies? ›

If you're after a sweeter flavor, opt for milk or white chocolate, but if you want to break down the already sweet cookie dough, go for semisweet or dark chocolate.

Can you use chocolate chunks instead of chocolate chips? ›

Similar to the case for chocolate chips, use chocolate chunks if you want your cookies to look homemade. They will have distinct, whole pieces of rectangular-shaped chocolate throughout. Because the chunks won't melt during the baking process, using them will result in puffier, thicker cookies.

Can I use melting wafers instead of chocolate chips? ›

They are often used in recipes where a more pronounced chocolate flavor and texture are desired. While chocolate chips and chocolate wafers are similar and can often be used interchangeably in recipes, there are some important differences between the two that affect their use in baked goods.

Why are my oatmeal chocolate chip cookies flat? ›

The Problem: Your Oven Is Too Hot

If your cookies repeatedly turn out flat, no matter the recipe, chances are your oven is too hot.

How do you keep oatmeal cookies from going flat? ›

If your cookies come out of the oven looking flat, you may not have adequately chilled the dough before baking. Chilling times may vary depending on the cookie you're making, but you should typically chill cookie dough in the refrigerator for at least two hours before you pop it in the oven.

Why are my oatmeal cookies rubbery? ›

Not Enough Moisture: Ensure you're using the right amount of butter in your recipe and that it's at the correct temperature (softened not melted) when you start. Oatmeal cookies require more moisture to stay soft. Consider adding an extra egg yolk or a touch of milk to your dough to enhance moisture content.

Which oats are better for cookies? ›

Old Fashioned: Also called rolled oats, old fashioned oats are flat and flakey. They absorb more water and cook faster than steel-cut oats — usually in about 5 minutes — and are the oat of choice for granola bars, cookies, and muffins.

Are quick oats better than rolled oats cookies? ›

The difference in texture might help you decide which type of oat you should use in a recipe. Rolled oats hold their shape well and give things a nice chew. This makes them perfect for baked goods and cookies. Quick oats are better for blending into recipes.

Which chocolate is better for cookies? ›

Balance Is Best

Since the dough itself is sweet, darker chocolate balances it out beautifully," she says. Still, she warns not to go to extremes. "That doesn't mean you should use very dark chocolate such as 90 percent or 100 percent because, by comparison, the chocolate will taste a lot more bitter."

Why do my oatmeal cookies get hard? ›

Cookies become hard when the moisture in them evaporates. This can be caused by leaving them out in the air for too long, baking them for too long, or storing them improperly.

How do you fix hard oatmeal cookies? ›

Here's what you need to do: Snuggle ¼ slice of bread per dozen cookies into the bottom of the container (use plain white bread, since it won't transmit any flavors). Allow to let sit covered for 24 hours, and replace the bread as needed, every time it starts to get stale.

Why are my chocolate chip cookies hard after baking? ›

This isn't a revolutionary tip and is probably quite obvious, but if you leave your cookies in the oven for even a few minutes longer than necessary, the mix will dry too quickly and lead to more rigid, dry cookies.

Should oatmeal cookies be soft or hard? ›

The best oatmeal cookies, like the kind we're sharing here, are soft and chewy through the center with crispy edges.
