A copycat recipe for the Outer Rim from Oga’s Cantina at Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge at Disney World. It’s a tequila co*cktail with passion fruit.

Nothing beats walking around Batuu at Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge and then enjoying a co*cktail at Oga’s Cantina. Unfortunately, I don’t live near Disney World! So I decided to recreate the magic of some of my favorite treats from Galaxy’s Edge at home.

This is a copycat recipe for the Outer Rim co*cktail. The Outer Rim is a tequila co*cktail with pomegranate, lime juice, and passion fruit puree. This drink is a fun spin on a margarita, so if you’re a margarita lover you need to give it a try!

Why Is the Drink Called the Outer Rim?

In Star Wars the Outer Rim Territories are a vast region of the last major star systems at the galaxy’s edge. They are sparsely populated and often home to illegal activity. Planets like Tatooine, Navarro, Dagobah, and Yavin are in the Outer Rim. The planet of Batuu, the home of Galaxy’s Edge, is also in the Outer Rim.

This drink costs about $20 at Oga’s Cantina. This copycat recipe will save you some money in the long run!

What Is In The Outer Rim?

According to the Oga’s Cantina menu, the Outer Rim contains Patron Silver tequila, Shinings pomegranate liqueur, lime juice, pure cane sugar, and exotic fruit puree with a black salt rim. For this copycat recipe, you need:

  • Silver Tequila – Silver tequila, also called blanco tequila, is the best tequila for this co*cktail. Silver tequila has a stronger, clearer taste than gold tequila. It is better for a fruity drink because it doesn’t mask the sweetness. I always have a bottle of Jose Cuervo in my liquor cabinet for margaritas so that is what I use for this drink too.
  • Pomegranate Liqueur – My local liqueur store carries Pama Pomegranate Liqueur. This liqueur is a rich crimson color with notes of agave and pepper. The spirit is made with a mix of pomegranate juice, tequila, and vodka.
  • Lime Juice – No margarita-style co*cktail is complete without a bit of fresh lime juice. It adds acidity to the co*cktail to balance the sweetness.
  • Pomegranate Juice – Use 100% pomegranate juice for this recipe. The juice is naturally sweet and a little tart. POM is my favorite brand of pomegranate juice to use.
  • Grenadine – This gorgeous red syrup adds additional sweetness and color to the co*cktail. Contrary to popular belief, grenadine is made with reduced pomegranate juice and sugar, not cherry juice. The pomegranate juice gives the syrup its vivid red color. If you don’t care for grenadine, substitute it for regular simple syrup.
  • Passion Fruit Puree – Create a simple passion fruit puree by blending 1/4 cup of frozen passion fruit with 1/4 cup of water or clear fruit juice. I use white cranberry juice, but white grape juice is a great option as well. Frozen passion fruit is available at most grocery stores, so making your own is the simplest option.

How to Make the Outer Rim

This co*cktail is the perfect drink for May the 4th or a Star Wars movie night! If you love margaritas, then you’ll love this fun Star Wars spin on the classic co*cktail.

Step One – In a small blender, add 1/4 cup of frozen passion fruit and 1/4 cup of water or clear fruit juice. Blend until it reaches a puree consistency.

Step Two – Then, combine tequila, pomegranate liqueur, lime juice, pomegranate juice, and grenadine in a co*cktail shaker.

Step Three – Next, add a handful of ice to the co*cktail shaker. Firmly secure the lid on the co*cktail shaker. Shake for 30 seconds to thoroughly combine and chill the ingredients.

Step Four – Strain the co*cktail over ice in a glass with a salted rim. Top with about two tablespoons of the passion fruit puree. You can stir the puree into the co*cktail, or leave it as a floater on top.

How to Salt Rim a Glass

Many margaritas have a salted rim. Adding salt to the rim of a margarita glass enhances the flavor of a good margarita, which is basically what this co*cktail is. The original Disney co*cktail uses black salt for the rim. Black salt looks more fun than regular salt, but it’s difficult to find in stores.

First, run a slice of lime along the rim of the glass. This creates a wet and sticky surface for the salt to stick to.

Next, flip the glass upside down and place it in a shallow bowl of margarita salt or kosher salt. Margarita salt is a coarse salt made of bigger salt flakes. So they are more visible. It also has a better flavor. If you make a lot of margaritas, consider buying a salt rimmer.

What Type of Glass Do I Use?

  • Star Wars Tumbler – What better way to enjoy a Star Wars co*cktail than in a Star Wars glass? The glasses I used are from the Deco collection by JoyJolt. But any Star Wars glass will do!
  • Rocks Glass A short tumbler or rocks glass is perfect for this co*cktail. At Oga’s Cantina, the Outer Rim is served in a stemless martini glass over ice.

Yes! These drinks are perfect for making in advance! Combine all of the ingredients, minus the puree, without ice. Store in an airtight jar or glass bottle until it is time to serve. After you serve the co*cktail, top each co*cktail with frozen passion fruit puree.

You may store this co*cktail in the refrigerator for up to a week. However, the flavor profile may change a bit the longer you store it!
