Request: Cookie blocker that acts just like the popup blocke
- Quote
Postby TychoQuad »
I would like to request a Cookie blocker that blocks cookies in the same way that the popup blocker blocks popups. That is, that whenever a cookie asks to be set, it is automatically refused, and added to an icon in the statusbar. If a cookie is required, we can then go to the statusbar which displays the names of all the cookies blocked on the currently focused site, and allows us to individually unblock them.
As the only cookies I set are for certain logins and a couple of forums, this would save me alot of trouble to do it this way.
Btw, I already know of the permit cookies extension, but i would like a more complete solution.

I posted somewhere else regarding this, but I think sites sending permanent cookies should have them automatically accepted for the session (and display an icon in the status bar).
At the end of the session, these session cookies would be forgotten/deleted/lost... If you want to allow the site to store the cookie permanently or whitelist the site in general, you would then click the icon and use the GUI it launches. If a session cookie is sent, it should be allowed automatically until the session closes.
This would be a much more user-friendly and intuitive way of handling the blocking, as currently you have to whitelist and refresh the site, whereas doing it via the method above would give the user warning and ample time to deal with the cookie management, while allowing the site to function first time.

I would be fine with that, but unfortunately, there still isn't any extension apart from the interface-less one avaliable.

I made a thread about this a while back. Personally, I don't want it to be an extension, but a permanent feature of the browser. Of course, the current options for cookies would still exist, but this should also be available as an option.

It's more likely to exist as an extension first... personally i think this kinda feature is too advanced for the regular user and as a result, shouldn't be in the core. Regardless of an icon, their gonna want to know why the browser isn't saving their cookies.
Then there's the fact that our one and only firefox dev is booked in with new features until 1.0. It'll be a long wait if we want it in the core, which is unlikely to happen.
Cusser: I was thinking again, If an extension added cookie blocking, (popup blocking style) then the user could pick whether they wanted the cookie to be automatically denied, or saved for the session before rejected, as this is already an option in the core. All we really need is an interface which will allow us to add cookies to the whitelist/allow

I think this should really be in the core, but you're right, it's most likely to be an extension first. I dont see how it's any more advanced than popup blocking really... People dont need to know how things work, as long as they understand the basics.
An alert icon in the statusbar would do the trick, IMO, as long as the dialog it spaws is sufficiently user-friendly and explanatory. If n00b users can understand popup blocking controls, they'll be able to manage this too, if there's some consistency between the two.
I think if anyone's going to attempt this as an extension they'll need to be pretty skilled, but then again, what do I know

Alright! now that's what i'm talking about! I believe this is even better than the statusbar solution, because I can put it anywhere I want, whereas the popup blocker, I can't.
Using Toolbar Enhancements extension, I can even place this icon in the statusbar if i so desired (Which I don't!)
Having the sites in a list like that... Much better than how the popup blocker spawns a window... I propose the popup blocker have a menu allowing you to block/unblock the same way as this extension

Ok I won't point you to the Quick Prefs extension as another alternative. There is a 'button' added that can be put on a toolbar.
It has a variety of cookie blocking selections, and a lot of other things you might find useful as well.

Hrmmm, same.
Could someone please look at this extension and find out why it's doing that "confused toolbar button" thingy?

At a guess, it has to do with a an interaction with one of the other extensions, maybe quickprefs, prefbuttons?
I have a funny experience, where a fresh profile (but with prefbutton and a few others, since it can only be installed into the app folder), and when i installed cookie button i had the same problem as you.
But when I tried my normal profile (which has loads of extensions turned on) it worked okay.. weird,.

Hmm is this one in either extension room, or the firefox extensions page? I seem to be running into quite a few that areant listed on either of these 2 sites. Some are experimental so fair enough, but some are not.

This one doesn't seem to be experimental, but something is buggered in it... it just doesn't like Firefox (anymore?)

The FF source already has this, the location is in the comm.jar in the cookie folder. i am not sure why it is not enabled.......... Maybe someone can snoop around and fish the code out into an extension and/or figure out how to enable it....
I am NOT looking fo an extension to enable/disable cookies...what i am asking about is the TRIGGERING the cookie icon to be on the status bar when the conditons in the Cookie Manger were met as it was originally in the Moz Suite (just like the popup icon)....clicking that icon enabled me to manage cookies.....
On Netscape/Moz 1.4 it is enabled.....just looking to restore that functionality.....
