Snow Crab Clusters

CrabPlace.com snow crab legs make excellent hors d'oeuvres served whole or in sections with drawn butter fordipping. Allow at least two per guest.

Our snow crab clusters for sale are cooked at sea where they are caught and flash frozen aboard the fishing vessels to protect their flavors. Frozen cooked crab legs may be steamed or microwaved. Place them frozen over boiling water and steam them covered tightly for 6 minutes. Or place the frozen crab legs in the microwave covered with a damp towel and heat on defrost for 5 minutes. Brush with melted butter, season to taste and serve with co*cktail sauce.

Important Facts About Your Snow Crabs

  • The appearance of the shell is often the result of the natural habitat the species is sourced from. Sometimes the shell appears discolored or has black spots on it. All of this is natural and does not affect the quality or delicious taste of your snow crab.
  • After the Crabs are caught, they are cooked and cooled, and then dipped in a saline brine before being flash frozen. This saline brine helps seal in the moisture and freshness to preserve the best taste. It is recommended to rinse off your Crab legs to help reduce the saltiness in the flavor.

How many legs do crabs have answers? ›

Crabs have 10 legs. The front two legs have claws. The other eight legs are used for walking. Crabs have an exoskeleton.

Is it better to boil or bake snow crab legs? ›

Steaming, grilling, and heating in the microwave are methods for cooking crab legs, but boiling is one of the best ways to cook crab legs and the method highly recommended by the Better Homes & Gardens Test Kitchen. The water gets into the shells, keeps the meat moist, and helps the meat heat through quickly.

Where did 1 billion snow crabs go? ›

A new study published by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) researchers in Science found that the billions of snow crabs weren't finding a new home—they were suffering from what was likely the largest mortality collapse known to the species.

What crab has 10 legs? ›

Horseshoe crabs have been around for more than 300 million years, making them even older than dinosaurs. They look like prehistoric crabs, but are actually more closely related to scorpions and spiders. The horseshoe crab has a hard exoskeleton and 10 legs, which it uses for walking along the seafloor.

Make sure you have enough crab legs

Since you don't know how hungry everyone will be, it's always best to err on the side of too much. Our general recommendation is between one and two pounds per person.

Do you rinse snow crab legs before cooking? ›

Wash your crab legs with water to make sure you get rid of any sand or grit on the shell. Fill the bottom of a steamer pot with about 3 inches of water. Once the water is boiling, add the crab legs to the steamer basket and reduce the heat so the water is simmering.

Can you overcook snow crab legs? ›

Steaming crab legs on the stovetop takes just 6 to 8 minutes. Warming in the oven requires more time, but the cook time is only 15 to 20 minutes. No matter how you decide to warm crab legs, do not overcook or the crab meat will be tough and dry.

Do you season the water when boiling crab legs? ›

For boiling or steaming

Don't be shy about adding salt, pepper, lemon juice and lemon rinds, or the classic Old Bay seasoning to your pot before boiling or steaming your crab legs. In fact, if you plan to boil, we'd recommend the proportion of 4 quarts of water to 6 ounces of seasoning.

Do you need to thaw frozen snow crab legs before cooking? ›

Thawing the legs before cooking is optional, but if you have the time, it's worth it. The legs will steam faster and more evenly if thawed. Ideally, thaw them in a bowl overnight in the refrigerator, but if you're tight on time, know that you can place them in a colander under cool running water until no ice remains.
