Hi, welcome to my childhood in a cookie. Seriously, the smells, the colors, the sprinkles – all of it – of this spritz butter cookie recipe just floods me with childhood memories of Christmas time.

I sat on the counter every single Christmas and made these cookies with my mom. The “gun” that made the cool shapes was the most fun. I remember the weight of picking out the perfect type of sprinkle for each shape and each color. So good.

Now I get to do this with my own daughter and I’m loving every second of it. She isn’t too into carefully picking the sprinkles yet, more just opening and dumping. However, she’s into it like I was and I hope she has the same fond memories of Christmas baking like I do.

There’s nothing quite like making homemade spritz cookies for the holiday season. And while their bright colors and unique shapes make them look like they’re hard to make, I’m hoping this recipe for spritz butter cookies will show you just how easy they can be.

How to Make Spritz Butter Cookies

The recipe for the spritz butter cookie dough is actually really simple. All you need is:

  • Butter
  • Sugar
  • Egg yolks
  • Vanilla extract
  • All-purpose flour
  • Salt
  • Food coloring
  • Sprinkles

The dough is mixed together in a stand mixer until it is slightly thick and sticky. Add in your favorite food coloring and then use a Spritz cookie maker as directed to make holiday shapes on your cookie sheet.

Should spritz cookies be decorated before or after baking?

You definitely want to add sprinkles before you bake these cookies. If you wait until after the cookies are baked before adding sprinkles, it will be a lot harder to get the sprinkles to stick to the surface of the cookies.

How do you get sprinkles to stick to butter cookies?

Simply putting the sprinkles on before baking goes a long way toward helping sprinkles stick to Spritz cookies. But if you need a little more help getting your sprinkles to stick, you could try a light egg wash before applying the sprinkles. If all else fails, frosting can fix just about any sprinkle mishap.

How long do spritz cookies stay fresh?

Want to make this spritz butter cookie recipe in advance of Christmas or a holiday party? Layer these cookies between sheets of waxed paper in an airtight container. This will protect the delicate shapes and sprinkles and keep the cookies from sticking together. At room temperature or in the refrigerator these cookies will stay fresh for about 3 days. You can also freeze the cookies for up to 3 months.

How do you make spritz cookies without a cookie press?

I’ve always made this spritz butter cookie recipe with a cookie press. But what if you don’t have one? Are you expected to just live your life without these cookies?

Luckily, there are a few ways to make this cookie without a press:

Option A: Piping. You can create some fun shapes for your homemade spritz cookies by using cake-decorating supplies. Simply fill a heavy-duty pastry bag with the dough, pipe out the dough onto a baking sheet using a large, decorative tip and bake.

Option B: Rolling and cutting. If you don’t have a cookie press, you can make these spritz butter cookies like any other shaped cookie: by rolling out the dough and cutting it out with a cookie cutter.

Do you guys make these spritz cookies every year too? What are your family baking traditions?
