What to bring to the EIKEN test? ›

Examinees should bring a pencil and eraser to the test site. Aside from the English Composition portions of Grades 1, Pre-1, and 2 EIKEN answer sheets are machine graded and must be filled in using an HB or mechanical pencil.

The EIKEN grades are given in two stages. The first stage is a paper-and-pencil test that evaluates reading, listening, and writing ability. The second stage is a speaking test in the format of a face-to-face interview. An examinee must pass both stages of a grade in order to receive certification.

As shown in Table 1, the seven levels of EIKEN are designated as “grades,” and range from Grade 5 (beginner) to Grade 1 (advanced), with two bridging levels (Grades Pre-1 and Pre-2). Each grade is administered on a pass/fail basis.

Change in Scoring System: In order to pass the first stage, an examinee must receive an EIKEN CSE Score (combined Reading, Writing, and Listening) of at least 2028 (out of 2550). In order to pass the second stage, an examinee must receive a score of at least 602 (out of 850).

Grade 3 is a compilation of the basic skills acquired for Grades 5 and 4. This level is aimed at Japanese junior high school graduates. Examinees are expected to be able to understand and use language concerning familiar, everyday topics, such as likes and dislikes, and basic personal and family information.

All the applicants must enter the room twenty (20) minutes earlier for the test. Please be sure to bring your Identification Slip and Photo ID (valid one) for your identification. If you were mailed out the application form, we will give you this identification slip on the test date.

Candidates should bring at least one pen, a pencil and a ruler to all examinations. Students must write in either blue or black ink (except for multiple choice papers). Students should use pencils for drawing and for multiple choice papers.
