Food ordering platform Zomato recently disclosed its food-ordering trends for this year, highlighting biryani and pizza as the top contenders, with over 10.09 crore and 7.45 crore orders, respectively. To give an idea of the orders, Zomato humorously illustrated that the year's biryani orders could fill eight Qutub Minars in Delhi, while the pizzas could cover an area larger than five Eden Garden cricket stadiums in Kolkata. Noodle bowls secured the third spot with over 4.55 crore orders, equivalent to circling the earth's circumference 22 times.
Bengaluru emerged as the city placing the most breakfast orders, while Delhi users displayed a preference for late-night orders. The most substantial single order, valued at Rs 46,273, came from Bengaluru, and Mumbai featured a user placing 121 orders in a single day. Other noteworthy unusual orders included a Bengaluru user gifting 1,389 orders worth Rs 6.6 lakh via Zomato.
Hanees, a resident of Mumbai, earned the title of "nation's biggest foodie" by placing 3,580 orders in 2023, averaging nine orders per day.
On rival platform Swiggy, Biryani continues its reign as the most popular dish, securing the top spot for the eighth consecutive year. In 2023, India collectively ordered an impressive 2.5 biryanis per second, with a ratio of every 5.5 chicken biryanis to one veg biryani, the food platform said. The biryani craze saw 2.49 million new users on Swiggy making their debut with a biryani order.
The platform witnessed an astounding 40,30,827 searches for biryani, emphasizing its unwavering popularity. Hyderabad stood out as the biryani capital, with every sixth biryani order originating from the city. A notable biryani enthusiast in Hyderabad took the crown, placing a remarkable 1633 biryani orders throughout the year, averaging more than four biryanis daily.
During a thrilling India Vs. Pakistan World Cup match in October, a biryani-loving family in Chandigarh made an extravagant order of 70 plates in one go. Swiggy experienced a surge, processing over 250 biryani orders per minute during this nail-biting match.
