MSc Architecture student at TU Delft

[#graduation #opentowork #sponsorshipoffer]I graduated with 10/10 and top honors from the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft, consistently ranked among the world's top 3 in Architecture. The #research, #design, #building #technology, and #presentation aspects of my work were all acknowledged with a maximum score, a distinction achieved by less than 4% of all Delft University of Technology graduates. This marks an important milestone and a beautiful moment of appreciation - but certainly not the end of this project! Several aspects of my #graduation were truly unique. I independently carried out a 4-month-long research project, including interviews with 30+ women, thanks to the RIBA Norman Foster Foundation Scholarship. With the support of over 50 international experts from various fields, I've reached a stage in which the real-scale #bamboo construction of this project is becoming realistic. I am looking for #sponsors to realize this plan! For more information about becoming a #sponsoring partner (and potentially contributing to the first permanent bamboo construction in the Netherlands!), please reach out via Linkedin or email: kika.zdziarska@gmail.comI'm open to explore #job opportunities, #collaborations, calls for papers, exhibitions, competitions, projects aligning with my values, interests and expertise in #sociallydriven architecture and #biobased materials. If you have anything in mind or know someone I should connect with, let me know!Returning to my hometown, #Warsaw, I'm eager to contribute to the local #architecture scene with the knowledge and experiences gained. I'm also interested in #hybrid work opportunities - I can travel to any location in #Europe once every few weeks, and I will consider fully #remote jobs. For now, I'm looking for part-time offers, as I will be completing previous commitments. I'm willing to begin working full-time since November. The concept of my graduation project lies in introducing #bamboo pavilions into urban infrastructure in Medellín, to enhance perceptions of #safety among #women and foster networks of mutual #care. The interest in bamboo stems from its #sustainability benefits, and potential to empower women in construction. Learning from international experts, and the Bamboo U course funded by the Forbes #25under25 award, I have deepened my understanding of this material. You can meet me at upcoming events where I'll further explore my passion for bamboo: #EuropeanBambooExpo, Bouw met Bamboe!, and at the Bamboo U campus in October which I will join as a KENZO Parfums awardee. For details of my project, refer to the TU Delft’s Repository: https://lnkd.in/diaU89YNI look forward to connecting with like-minded people and continuing to make a meaningful impact in the field of architecture through research and design.#architecture #design #architect #biobased #bamboo #bestgraduates #cumlaude #construction #prototype #tudelft #women #safety #publicspace #sponsorship

I'm grateful to my tutors, Leontine de Wit, Amy Thomas and Rufus van den Ban, and my exam delegate - Maarten van Ham for encouraging me to take this project as far as it could go. To Roel van de Pas for leading the most amazing #ExploreLab studio, where I could truly be myself and define my own path. To Marcel Bilow, and Merel Miedema, Tim Jonathan from The Green Village for believing in this project, and motivating me to work towards it 1:1 construction. And to Esteban Morales and Santiago Perdomo from The Best Bamboo, who made this idea much more realistic. I am incredibly grateful for the continuous support from my family, my partner, and my friends in this very busy time, in which I have put a lot of my effort and heart into this project.

“Workspace Building: Innovation in Today's Africa”, the official Student Competition for DWL 2023One of our main goals at Design Week Lagos is to see design become a leading problem-solving tool in today's Africa. DWL aims to provide an opportunity for students from a variety of backgrounds to participate and demonstrate their problem-solving and design skills with refreshing perspectives that could ultimately influence African society. This competition is not just an event; it's a catalyst for transformation, a chance for emerging talents to shine on an African stage. A distinguished voice from our past, Folasope Pinheiro, the esteemed winner of the 2020 DWL Student Competition, eloquently shared during a recent DWL IG Live Series: 'Throughout my enriching journey in the DWL student competition, I cultivated a profound sense of pride and discovered the innate beauty within my African and Nigerian heritage.”Why This Competition Matters:1. Encouraging Innovation: Innovation is the lifeblood of design. The competition challenges students to think outside the box, to take risks, and to pioneer new design concepts.2. Networking Opportunities: The competition offers students a chance to connect with industry professionals, mentors, and like-minded peers. These connections often lead to invaluable opportunities.Calling all aspiring architects and designers to apply for DWL 2023 Student Competition, themed Workspace Building: Innovation in Today's Africa. Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity. To apply and be part of this exciting competition, visit https://lnkd.in/diMnNq_K Submission Deadline: October 7, 2023

We’d love to introduce you toMargaux Humbert! She has already been a part of the Superuse team in Rotterdam since the beginning of this year as an intern, and will stay on our team for the upcoming year as a colleague. We’ve asked her a few questions, so you can get to know her a bit as well:_ How did you end up at Superuse?"After graduating, I didn't feel like working in a "conventional" architecture office, I couldn't picture myself sitting in front of a computer all day, drawing concrete cubes and making disconnected design, without questioning the building production process etc... I wanted to pursue something more aligned with my values, so I applied to firms all around Europe that were striving to make a difference, approaching architecture in a more sustainable way. I chose to join Superuse because I hadn't previously had the chance to work with reused materials."_ What is your background?"I am a trained architect from Jura (France) and I studied in Marseille and Toulouse. During my studies, I focused more on the social aspects of our built environment. I developed a keen interest in social issues, particularly during my Erasmus year in Athens, where topics like migrations and hospitality captivated me. While social aspects were my primary focus, I also explored sustainable and biobased materials. I believe that social, environmental, and economic issues are interconnected. I didn't have the opportunity to delve deeply into the topic of reused materials, which is why I sought out this internship."_ What advice would you give to make an impact as an individual?"I think anyone can contribute, often by refraining from certain actions rather than actively engaging in new ones. It's also about being aware of what truly matters, being conscious of what you eat, use, buy, and consume. Considering where you direct your energy, whom you support with your money and time. It involves asking yourself simple questions: Do I truly need this fast fashion t-shirt? Do I genuinely want to consume this steak? Can I renovate an existing house instead of building a new one? Understanding how and where things are produced holds immense significance because it enables you to act accordingly.Once you're conscious, you can choose whether to make an effort or not, but at least you have knowledge.I would like to add that sustainability is not about restrictions; it's a gateway to creativity. Just like cooking vegan dishes, for example, architecture is a form of culinary art. Crafting sustainable and circular architecture means embracing creativity and discovering innovative approaches rather than adhering to conventional recipes. To me, it's immensely stimulating and far more interesting."If you have any questions for Margaux, feel free to leave a comment. She will answer them personally! And make sure to follow her on Instagram: https://lnkd.in/etYUwfzq#Superuse#SuperuseStudios#WelcomeToTheTeam#CircularEconomy

Christopher Prawira, a Bachelor of Design student from the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning and UMSU International's Vice President, chatted to us about his life as an international student, how his interests led him to study at #UniMelb and how you don't need to have everything figured out straight away."I have always loved the process of creating something. Pair that with my interests in pop culture and the digital world, and you kind of get graphic design!"Even though Chris knew he wanted to pursue design, he still wasn't sure what he wanted to major in."I took various subjects, from architecture to landscape to urban planning, but I realised none fit me. It's great that I could take various classes from different disciplines and finally choose the right one.""Sometimes, it takes a bit of experimentation and time, and that's okay! There's no rush to figure everything out instantly, as you might do this for the rest of your life. No pressure, but take your time and choose well!"Chris feels a strong sense of friendship with other students, and says that even though he's so far away from home, he's never felt lonely 🏠"Going out with friends is as important as doing assignments and studying since you won't achieve your best without a healthy mind."Another highlight for Chris has been his role as Vice President of UMSU International, where he heads up the Media and Marketing department."I can leverage my graphic design knowledge to communicate important information to the vulnerable international student community. The fulfilment you get when working as part of a dedicated organisation is unique and special. It’s the fulfilment you can’t get from academics or social life, as you learn valuable skills that cannot be learned elsewhere."

🤯 FAILED Luckily it wasn't my fault but sadly Bamia didn't survive the turbulent COVID era. The collapse of Bamia left staff and suppliers dealing with liquidators, although I was fully paid for the Bamia design work the umbrella company owed me thousands for another project. A hard lesson to learn, especially in the early stages of a design business. But what did I learn:🌊 You never know when a good client might go bad, so keep that pipeline full.🤝 Contacts made at Bamia have led to many more fulfilling projects and good friends.🪦 You can still be proud of your work even if it's in the pixel graveyard. At Bamia traditional Eastern Mediterranean dishes are stripped back and reimagined for its urban setting in South East London. Bamia means okra. Okra has a heptagonal cross-section, this process of simplifying forms was the basis of the visual system. The graph paper promotes structure but also exploration, hence further reinforcing the idea of stripping back and reimagining. 🧠 Find more failed but mainly successful brands at lookatthat.studio

  • 2023 GIfA Award EntryVote for your favourite project: https://lnkd.in/eHVJSD-rApex StudiosBraamfontein, Johannesburgfor Growthpoint Student Accommodation Holdingsby GASS Architecture StudiosThe development houses 901 students over 13 storeys in a new residential building, which consists of a variety of unit types, each with a private shared bathroom and kitchen lending itself to an apartment style of living. The units range from 1,2,3 and 4 bedrooms with minimal shared rooms in the overall scheme. In this regard, the students connect with fellow roommates whilst benefitting from a more private communal area. The existing heritage building has been restored and extensively refurbished to create a communal hub for the scheme with various study and social spaces for different activities and group sizes. The raw, modularised materials of the existing building influenced the new residential building. Concrete, face-brick and colour create a sophisticated yet playful new architectural language, interpreting the geometry of the existing architectural style through a contemporary lens. Whilst the indoor common areas become the hub, the external zones are interwoven between the common and residential areas to allow for constant access to nature. Students traverse the site horizontally and vertically to occupy these break-out, play and socializing areas. Thus, the scheme is constantly activated, allowing more connections between students to develop. The bustling nature of the site location meant it was important to integrate the scheme into the context to encourage street-level engagement. The open piazza was designed for public gatherings and as a spill-out space for the games area. The facility has been designed to be easily converted into a café so that this could, in the future, become a publicly accessible gathering space. The fully let student accommodation scheme is a testament that not only is student accommodation a necessity in this area but that this proposal has provided an affordable, aspiring and sustainable lifestyle option to these students.Photographer: Louis van Zylhttp://wix.to/Kinv4Wg#gifa #gifaawards #gifaawards2023

  • In the meticulous design of the MSSU campus, a key consideration was the deliberate separation of academic & residential spaces. The academic buildings and student hostels are connected by a sprawling green ecological park and trail, fostering a serene environment where students can engage in various activities without overlapping with their lecture schedules.Comprising 40% regulatory open space, the campus boasts an interactive and sustainable public realm. A dense tree network has been strategically implemented to provide segregation in zoning but also stitches through the landscape, distinguishing the hostel area from the academic buildings. An open auditorium, situated within the urban green side of the campus, allows students to organize cultural activities. The journey into the campus begins with a tranquil lawn mound, creating a peaceful ambiance that leads to a sit-out area surrounded by lush vegetation, acting as a buffer for the hostels. This path further unfolds into an amphitheater & a large open area for both planned and spontaneous activities, With this mindset the cafeteria is also strategically placed to be accessible from academic buildings, hostel buildings, & Sports ground. providing a natural setting for impromptu meetings & discussions. The design philosophy extends to the architecture of the academic buildings, promoting interaction among students from different departments. Connecting corridors facilitate easy circulation, with cafe areas strategically placed beneath the main stairs, creating vibrant meeting points for students. Courtyards interspersed between the three academic buildings contribute to an open and inviting atmosphere. The stacking of the buildings is thoughtfully arranged based on functionality and adjacency, aligning with the zoning of spaces. A generously sized library is located in the lower ground area, sticking all academic buildings together. In a nod to sustainability, architecture fins replace traditional glazing in front of the buildings, adding a striking feature in the elevation so that it becomes a landmark for the coming generation while improving ventilation and reducing heat inside the building. To foster innovation, an Innovation Hub building is positioned at the bottom right of the campus, serving as a focal point where research students can interact with the global community. This hub encompasses a spectrum of activities designed to empower individuals and institutions, addressing diverse needs from policy analysis to capacity development at local, national, and international levels. The result is a thoughtfully designed campus that seamlessly integrates academic & living spaces while promoting sustainability, collaboration, and innovation.By employing meticulous design and strategic zoning, our plan aims to establish a harmonious environment, fostering collaboration, and academic excellence, & leaving behind a lasting legacy for generations to come.#urbandesign #landscape

Prepping for my PM for Construction class and was struck yet again by the textbook.I use - Project Management in Construction by Sidney Levy – been using this text for years; now on the 7th edition – a 2018 publication. Right there in Ch. 1 (pg. 5) Levy quotes a #Gensler study noting the “6 𝐦𝐞𝐠𝐚 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬”that will impact our world economy by 2025 -edition 7 published 2 WHOLE YEARS prior to the pandemic. Here's the trends as noted in the textbook:✅ Trend 1: The digital world we experience today will become more of an integral part of our working & leisure lives. We will interact with this stream of digital data to improve our work and home life.✅ Trend 2: The world around us will become smarter. Buildings, products and services will be more integrated, offering us more connectivity to people and places, and access to good at an astoundingly faster pace.✅ Trend 3: Time is money. Business and personal purchases will expect no “dead time”. Construction projects, both design & build will undoubtedly fit into this category, more so than today. Schedule commitment will become sacrosanct.✅ Trend 4: Urban centers will be connected by HUMAN networks. Real estate in urban areas will innovate in both form and means to meet new lifestyles. Transit-served hubs will allow for new growth and incorporate what are now suburban areas.✅ Trend 5: Neo-Industrial cities will transition to centers where innovation is key to growth. These cities will support digital and artisanal cultures, freelance innovators and the tools and the enviroments to speed ne products and ideas to the market.✅ Trend 6: Health and Safety will take a leading role in protecting individuals or an entire city. Disasters created by nature or those man-made that urban areas often face, along with security threats, epidemics and pandemics will be managed by a government mind – set armed with data and the tools necessary to deal with these issues. Smart cities will prepare to engage and deal with matters related to Wellness.Today I'll discuss these trends with students not as theoretical trends but realities. Every semester since 2021 that I’ve used this text I’m always struck by these “trends” because while farfetched – sort of makes #Gensler look a little bit like Nostradamus. 🧙♂️ As I tell my students:💡 "We don’t need to see what’s right in front of us to know or influence where we are going.”💡 "We don’t need to look behind us; the answer is not there.”💡 "If we want an idea of where to go or what to consider – look to the edges, to the margins. Seek out the signals & drivers; the outliers, you will find your answers there”I wonder how many people if any remember this study by Gensler, or have used this exact text in teaching Construction Management or Project Management – where the writing was on the wall. The signals & the drivers, the answers were in the margins or in this case in the textbook all along.Today will be a fun lecture. 👏
