Common Questions About Smoked Pork Chops

Bone-in pork chops or boneless pork chops: Which is better?

Both can work wonders. While bone-in chops might retain a tad more flavor, boneless chops are convenient for quicker eating. I like to use boneless myself. It might just be my imagination, but they seem to be juicier this way.

What type of smoker gives the best-smoked pork chops?

While many swear by the Traeger pellet smoker, electric smokers or gas grills can be great alternatives. It often boils down to personal preference. Use whatever you have on hand for this recipe!

Do I need to use olive oil?

Olive oil helps the dry rub stick to the pork and gives it a light, delicious taste. You can spritz or drizzle it on. Whatever you like!

Storage

Smoked pork chops are best enjoyed right out of the smoker. Though they’re great as leftovers, I love the experience of hot, juicy pork, freshly smoked!

Refrigerator

Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat to enjoy them the next day!

Freezer

Place pork chops in an airtight container or freezer bag. They can be frozen for up to 2 months.

Tips

Cooking pork can sometimes be tricky. You don’t want to dry them out until they are practically leather – haha! Experience is key here. I’ve got some tips below to give you a hand!

  • Use an instant-read meat thermometer to ensure you get the desired internal temperature of the pork.
  • If you’re unsure, slice one pork chop open. If you see a little pink, cook just until that’s gone.
  • For a richer flavor, consider using cherry or pecan wood for smoking.
  • Letting the pork rest for 5-10 minutes after cooking allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in more tender pork chops.

Ingredients

My favorite thing for pork chop seasoning is the one by Traeger. Seriously, guys, you can’t go wrong with this stuff. It blends so well with whatever fruit wood you want to use in your smoker.

How to Make Smoked Pork Chops

Don’t skip the spice rub! You might be surprised at how much seasoning you can rub a slab of meat with. Be generous with your seasonings and you’ll get the best flavor!

  1. Preheat the smoker to 225 degrees f.
  2. Lay the pork chops on a tray and spritz them with oil.
  3. Sprinkle on the seasonings and pat them down so that it sticks to the meat. Flip and do the same to the other side.
  4. Once the smoker is heated – place the pork chops on the smoker, close the lid, and smoke them for 45 minutes.
  5. Then increase the heat to 300 degrees and cook until the internal temp reaches 145 degrees. This process should take another 15-20 minutes.
